A Pripaso Car DVR - also popularly known as a dash camera or a dashcam - can be installed in a car, making use of a dashcam installation kit and the car's power supply to power it. This type of installation procedure is commonly known as hardwiring.
For the purpose of this article, the terms car DVR and dashcam will be used interchangeably. It should be noted that working with an automotive power supply can be dangerous for you as well as for the auto, so this should not be attempted by unqualified/inexperienced people.
1. Select the Location of the Dashcam
An ideal position for the dashcam should be within an arm's reach from the driver's seat and should not obstruct the view of the road in front.
2. Locate the Fusebox of the Car
In most cars, the fusebox is located beneath the dashboard, either on the driver side or the passenger side. Consult the owner's manual to find the location, if required.
3. Select a Route for the Power Cable
Run the power cable between the dashcam and the fuse box in an approximate position where it would fit behind the car's interior after the final installation. This would provide a rough idea of the slack that would be needed at one or more locations and the total cable length requirement.
In most cases, a gap where the wire can fit behind the A-pillar would be found simply by tugging on the rubber trim that lies along the edge of the A-pillar. Removal of the A-pillar cover may be required in some cases. The removal method can be found by consulting either the car's technical manual or a professional. Once all this is finalized, tuck the wire behind the A-pillar and route it along and behind the other interior panels so that it runs between the dashcam and the fusebox.
4. Locate a "Hot in Start" Fuse
Car fuses in general can be of two types: always hot (where power is available all the time) and hot in start (where power is available only when the car is running). By connecting the dashcam to a hot in start fuse, it will turn on automatically when the car is running and will get turned off when the car is stopped. A hot in start fuse can be located with the help of a circuit tester
(that will light up when power is present). Use a tester to locate a fuse that has no power when the car ignition key is turned off and gets power when the ignition is turned on.
5. Test the Installation
At this point, the DVR should turn on by switching on the ignition.
6. Secure Excess Cables and the Installation Kit
Bunch up any excess cable, tie it with a zip tie, and secure it in a suitable location near the fuse box. Do the same with the installation kit as well. Electrical tape can also be used if required.
7. Re-fit Interior Panels
Once the basic installation is completed and the dashcam is working satisfactorily, re-fit any interior panels that were removed earlier.
